Travels

Stockholm, Sweden

Snow fell lightly outside as I looked out the window to the city outside.

The final stop on our Scandinavia trip, I was excited to experience Stockholm.

Days were spent wandering narrow streets in old neighborhoods with warm beverages in hand and having brunch with friends. A visit to a neighborhood distillery making small batch gin from herbs grown on site sent us searching for a way to bring it home.

Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan, seems to have come straight from a storybook with it’s colorful building and tight cobblestone streets.

Just outside the city center is Rosendals Tragard where one can expect to cozy up with fresh, warm food in a greenhouse among fresh flowers and plant life waiting for Spring.

Metro station murals are sprinkled throughout the city and are like a real life treasure hunt. Large sweeping, vines that grow up over your head and rainbows that stretch from one side of the station to the other provide a breath of fresh air and life in the underground spaces.

Good design is everywhere—even small businesses invest in well-made furniture, designer lighting, and making their space beautiful. The thoughtful aesthetic & details make this historical city a pleasure to explore and enjoy.

FOOD

  • Woodstockholm - Great splurge meal. Food is very impressive. Space is limited and it fills up so make a rezzie.

  • Urban Deli - casual cafe serving fresh food, soups, and salads

  • Kaferang - See above

  • Pom & Flora - great breakfast or brunch spot. Healthy and delicious menu.

  • Rosendals Tradgard - this place is dreamy! Tucked in a glass greenhouse in a nursery, fresh farm to table food is prepared and placed on a large table for you to help yourself. The space is beautiful and the food is good! Worth a walk through the park it is in as well.

ACTIVITIES

  • Stockholms Branneri - we visited this micro distillery and met one of their owners who told us their story and showed us their (very tiny) facility. We bought some of their gin to bring home from a liquor store and have enjoyed it!

  • Gamla Stan - this is an old part of the city and worth a little stroll around.

  • Djurgarden - cool island that has lots of gardens and natural land. Fun to walk around on your way to Rosendals Tradgard.

  • Metro Stations (T-Centralen: blue leaves, Stadion: rainbow) - there are some really cool murals in a few of the Metro / Underground stations. Fun to ride the train to them and explore.
